Public accounting tax careers

Public accounting offers tax professionals exposure to multiple clients, industries and technical situations. Career paths commonly progress from staff and senior roles to manager, senior manager, director and partner, although titles and expectations vary by firm.

Firms frequently seek professionals with experience in federal, state and local compliance; tax research; planning; review; client communication; and staff supervision. Experience with partnerships, corporations, individuals, trusts, estates or nonprofit organizations may be especially valuable depending on the practice.

Candidates should evaluate a firm’s client mix, partner accessibility, training, technology, workload expectations and promotion criteria. A smaller regional firm may provide broad responsibility and direct client contact, while a national firm may offer deeper specialization and larger engagements. Neither environment is automatically better—the fit depends on your preferred work and career direction.

On your résumé, distinguish preparation from review responsibility and explain the complexity of the engagements you manage. Include licenses, industries, entity types, team leadership and examples of advisory or planning work.
