Corporate tax careers

Corporate tax professionals support an organization’s compliance, reporting, planning and risk-management responsibilities. Depending on the company, a role may cover income tax provision, federal and state compliance, indirect tax, international tax, transfer pricing, audits, tax technology or a combination of areas.

Moving from public accounting into industry often changes the rhythm of the work rather than eliminating deadlines. Candidates should understand the company’s filing calendar, close process, acquisition activity, geographic footprint, tax technology and reliance on outside advisors.

Employers value technical accuracy, strong controls and the ability to communicate tax implications to finance and business leaders. Experience improving processes, implementing systems, supporting transactions or resolving examinations can differentiate a candidate.

Evaluate the position’s visibility, staffing, reporting relationship and opportunity to broaden your responsibilities. Ask how success will be measured during the first year and what business changes are likely to affect the tax function.
